Beyond Fees to Future: Emem Abraham’s Journey with GAMAID Foundation

I am Emem Abraham, a 28-year-old law graduate living in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. In 2019, the weight of my Law School fees threatened to derail my dreams—none of the financial plans my parents devised seemed to be enough. At the same time, my work demanded skills I did not possess: I knew almost nothing about sound engineering, video editing felt like an inscrutable art, and the very idea of building a website seemed out of reach. To add to the pressure, I needed reliable accommodation close to my workplace so that I could commute safely and still cover my basic living expenses.

My connection to GAMAID Foundation began through my church family at God’s Lighthouse. In November 2019, Barr. Ita Udoh generously sent me ₦297,000 to pay my Law School fees, framing it as a loan that they would forgive if my parents could not repay. True to their word, the amount was later written off, freeing me to focus fully on my studies without burdening my family.

Years later, GAMAID continued to invest in my growth. In 2023, I had the privilege of apprenticing under a professional sound engineer—an immersive training valued at hundreds of thousands of naira—that demystified audio systems and gave me hands-on experience. Around the same time, I learned the fundamentals of video editing, building a skill set that has since become integral to my work. Most recently, in June and July 2025, they arranged a comprehensive WordPress course that taught me to build websites from scratch—another invaluable asset in today’s digital landscape.

When I returned to Uyo and resumed work early in 2023, GAMAID again provided a lifeline by arranging rent-free accommodation. From January to June 2023—and then in a fully serviced apartment through February 2025—they covered both my housing and feeding expenses. Having a stable place to live, complete with reliable electricity, water, and internet, removed the ever-present worry of late-night commutes and unsafe neighborhoods.

The impact of these interventions has been transformative. The ₦297,000 school-fee support enabled me to complete the Nigerian Law School program with my family’s finances intact. The technical trainings in sound, video editing, and web development gave me a versatile toolkit—allowing me to step in whenever specialized personnel were unavailable and to broaden my professional opportunities. And the accommodation and feeding support safeguarded my well-being, giving me the freedom to focus on both my work and my studies without fear.

Thank you, GAMAID Foundation, for arming me with both the means to complete my legal education and the digital skills that now sustain my career. Your generosity has given me more than temporary relief—it has prepared me for a future of independence and contribution. I am deeply grateful for your steadfast support.
