Sheltered in Grace: Inemeno’s Journey from Despair to Hope
I am Inemeno Abara, a 22-year-old student at the University of Uyo, and in August and September 2023, I walked through one of the darkest seasons of my life. My provisions had completely run out, and I was left with no means to support myself. Lectures had resumed, yet the campus hostels remained closed, denying me access to my assigned room. Each morning I awoke with the weight of uncertainty—no food, no secure shelter, and nowhere safe to rest my head. The fear of being stranded on campus without basic necessities gnawed at me, threatening both my physical well-being and my academic focus.
In that moment of profound need, GAM Aid appeared as an answer to prayer. They opened their arms and provided me with a stable place to stay, lifting the constant anxiety over where I would sleep each night. Alongside shelter, they extended crucial financial support: between late 2023 and early 2024, I received over ₦10,000 in timely disbursements. Those funds became a lifeline, enabling me to purchase essential provisions—rice, garri, eggs, and the little extras that kept me nourished and cared for. As I awaited the reopening of my hostel, GAM Aid also gifted me a comfortable mattress and necessary utensils, and on several occasions, they ensured I had cooked meals waiting for me.
This comprehensive care meant more than just meeting my immediate needs; it restored my hope and renewed my strength to continue my studies. Having a secure roof over my head removed the distraction of survival and allowed me to concentrate fully on my coursework. The financial assistance kept hunger at bay. The simple gift of a mattress and utensils brought back a sense of dignity and normalcy. In those weeks and months, I learned that genuine compassion can transform despair into determination, and that community support can fuel academic and personal growth.
My heart overflows with gratitude to GAM Aid and to the Lord who moved through this organization on my behalf. Their kindness carried me through a season that could have broken me, and their love reminded me that I am never truly alone. May God continue to grant GAM Aid the grace, wisdom, and resources to uplift many more students in their hour of need—just as they lifted me when I had neither food nor shelter and no one else to turn to.
